What is said is differnt from what is heard. And, as with writing something out of context, requires an understanding of the listner's, reader's perceptions.

The example given is excellent since it challenged my thinking where I, then, started to think about why I had a base from which to start.

Not so much a definition in the words but the need to defining how I read them, inferred from them and built on the challenges you are making.
