Working in northern Kenya in the early 90s I was part of the informal sector support and witness to mob justice as the police were seen as ineffective.
Set thoughts in my head but did not prepare me fully for the Rwanda Genocide seen first in Burundi and then Rwanda. The racism and ethnic abuse very apparent. The colour my skin gave me some deference but the fury and overwhelming hate inspired by men, men, far removed from the killing fields unpicked this.
How do we address the popularist politicians propagating hate? I do not know the complete answer but do know your's, and other's, communicating starts engagement and opens us all to dialogue as the basis for renewed actions.
