Not an American Garrick, very aware of history and how we are not learning from what has happened to address issues and outright problems today and opportunity to form, shape and create an equitable tomorrow.

Experienced the tensions of the New Cross fires 1981 and swiftly aware of the overt racism as well class struggles of inner city - Lewisham protests (see Steve McQueen's excellent documentaries referenced in the pieces written)

Working in northern Kenya in the early 90s I was part of the informal sector support and witness to mob justice as the police were seen as ineffective.

Set thoughts in my head but did not prepare me fully for the Rwanda Genocide seen first in Burundi and then Rwanda. The racism and ethnic abuse very apparent. The colour my skin gave me some deference but the fury and overwhelming hate inspired by men, men, far removed from the killing fields unpicked this.

How do we address the popularist politicians propagating hate? I do not know the complete answer but do know your's, and other's, communicating starts engagement and opens us all to dialogue as the basis for renewed actions.
